Neal Communities Hosted Riverview High School Construction Academy Field Trip

Neal Communities, the area’s largest private homebuilder, hosted a two-hour field trip and bus tour for 23 students from the Riverview High School Construction Academy on September 19. The students boarded a bus at the high school and were driven to Windward at Lakewood Ranch where their tour guide, Neal Communities Project Manager Travis Urbanick, and Katie Rhyne, Neal Communities community affairs coordinator, joined them. From there, the bus tour allowed the students to observe various construction sites with projects in progress, including land development, slab pouring, framing, electrical and plumbing rough-ins, siding, drywall, stucco completion and roofing, all with Urbanick providing commentary. They also toured completed homes and the Discovery Center, where Neal Communities Area Sales Manager MaryAnn Koops spoke with them.

“This is a great program for students who are interested in a career in the construction industry,” said Urbanick. “The students were engaged, asked lots of questions and were able to experience a community and walk through the model homes. We hope to see these kids back in a few years for internships.”

Last year, Neal Communities donated $50,000 to the Construction Academy, the first program of its kind in Sarasota County. It incorporates a curriculum from the National Center of Construction Education and Research along with hands-on experiences for students. Upon completion of the four-year program, high school students graduate with industry-recognized credentials and gain access to local internships, apprenticeships and job opportunities.

Charlene Neal, president of Charlene Neal PureStyle, a partner company of Neal Communities, organized the donation because of her desire to support a program that would have lasting positive effects on the students at Riverview High School, her alma mater.

In addition to the financial contribution, Neal Communities offered to provide staff resources to assist with the program, including field trips such as this one, internships and apprenticeships.

Riverview High School Construction Trades Instructor Alex Lichter of Sarasota County Schools said, “The trip was fantastic! Katie and Travis are both very knowledgeable about their respective careers. The students really liked the fact that they could actually see what was being talked about, and it helped them understand a lot more of what was being said to them.”

  • Neal Communities Sponsors Team for 2023 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Neal Communities Sponsors Team for 2023 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

For the seventh year, Neal Communities is sponsoring a team for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, presented by the American Cancer Society. The walk is a fundraiser, but it’s also a celebration of courage and hope, uniting those impacted by breast cancer. It raises lifesaving funds that support patients, survivors, thrivers and caregivers through every step of the journey.

For Raylene Gaines, the leader of the Neal Communities team, participating is a passion. Several people close to her have been impacted by breast cancer, including a close friend, her uncle and her mother, Margaret Bovinett. This is her thirteenth year leading a team for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

“Early detection saves lives and that’s what this is all about,” said Gaines. “Getting the word out about the prevalence of breast cancer is incredibly important, and I’m very passionate about it because I know so many people who have been affected by it.”

Gaines is the office manager at Charlene Neal PureStyle, The Neal Communities team, called Building Hope with Pink Pride, is open to anyone who would like to join. Members of the team raise funds individually, and Neal Communities has also contributed $3,500 to the cause. So far, the team has raised $5,077 and is working towards a goal of $10,000.

This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, October 21, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The walk is noncompetitive, with both a 1-mile and 3-mile option, and strollers are welcome. After the walk, live musical entertainment and food trucks will keep the celebration going.

“Anyone is welcome to join our team,” said Gaines. “Just go to www.MakingStridesWalk.org/SarasotaManatee and look for the Neal Communities team. Or start your own!”

Part of the fun is seeing the crowds of walkers dressed in pink. Some take it a step further with creative costumes, including Gaines’ son Shane. Last year, he donned a decorative pink bra over his t-shirt. Gaines said it is always fun to see what Shane wears, and she appreciates his walking to support his family members and their battles against the disease.

Pat Neal, founder and chairman of Neal Communities, frequently supports the causes that are important to employees of Neal Communities and the communities where the company builds.  “We are honored to support such a worthy cause in the local community while also supporting one of our employees,” said Neal. “Raylene Gaines and the rest of the Building Hope with Pink Pride team make us proud with their dedication of time and resources to this cause.”

So far, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has raised $245,720 towards a goal of $490,000. Additional walkers and teams are welcome. For more information on how you can get involved, visit www.MakingStridesWalk.org/SarasotaManatee.

Neal Communities Breaks Ground on Final Building in Seychelles

Neal Communities, Southwest Florida’s largest private homebuilder, has broken ground on the final building that will complete Seychelles, a carriage home community near downtown Naples. Seychelles includes 28 buildings with a total of 224 units built around three lakes and preserve areas with an elegant tropical feel. With this final building underway, construction is nearing completion on this community, and homes are selling quickly.

Seychelles features four styles of designer carriage homes that start in the low $500s and range from two to three bedrooms, one- or two-car garages, and 1,339 to 1,725 square feet. This gated community offers a clubhouse, resort-style pool, spa and fitness center. Residents may socialize and gather around a fire pit or relax and enjoy daily sunsets on an event lawn. In addition to the residential amenities, all of the homes in Seychelles offer an oversized private outdoor lanai, well-equipped kitchen with island, laundry rooms, spacious walk-in closets and large master suites.

“Breaking ground on the last building in Seychelles is an exciting milestone for us and those who are already living in and enjoying the community,” said Tim Oak, Tim Oak, south region president for Neal Communities.

  • For Neal Communities’ Katie Rhyne, It’s All About Career Growth with a Community Focus

For Neal Communities’ Katie Rhyne, It’s All About Career Growth with a Community Focus

Katie Rhyne never knows what the day might bring in her role as community affairs coordinator for Neal Communities. Some days, she’s working with local nonprofits on ways the home builder can help support their efforts. At other times, she might be focusing on a land-use issue or talking with members of local government.

“Every day looks a little different,” she says. “My job is about maintaining Neal’s position and reputation in the community in a professional sense, in a philanthropic sense, and within our own communities.”

A career highlight for Katie in her year and a half at Neal Communities has been her work on a recent land-use entitlement project. “We had a really exciting project approved earlier this year that my efforts were instrumental in,” she says. “It’s cool to see the fruits of my labor in that approval and how it benefits the company overall.”

Katie is no stranger to giving back outside of work. She’s involved with her church in multiple capacities and is currently mentoring a high schooler through Take Stock in Children. Through her job at Neal, she’s able to expand on that personal interest in her professional life.

“A lot of the organizations that we partner with have been suggested by Neal team members who have some sort of history or connection to them,” she says. “So we support them year after year. It’s fulfilling to be able to create relationships and then continue to support those relationships.”

Katie herself is building relationships that will prove beneficial in her career development. Her goal was to work for a large local company, and taking on this role at Neal Communities is helping her develop knowledge about the local region and gain valuable skills she’ll keep using as her career progresses.

“I’m lucky with my current role that I’m being trained in different areas and learning skills that I’ll be able to apply to any job,” she says. “And I appreciate the exposure to different nonprofits, organizations, and positions that do great work in our community.”

She’s also found the kind of workplace culture she was looking for at Neal Communities. “There’s definitely an investment in the employees,” she says. “And we’re all working together very hard for a common goal.”

Katie’s just starting out in her career, and she’s encountered plenty of coworkers at Neal to look to for guidance or inspiration. That includes her supervisor, Ivory Matthews, who serves as the company’s vice president of community and governmental affairs. “She’s very good at explaining things to me and really taking the time and walking me through the steps and the processes,” says Katie. “I’ve been thankful for that.”

“I’ve also enjoyed getting to work under Pat Neal’s leadership,” she says. “There is definitely a lot to learn from him.”

When she’s not working, Katie can often be found outdoors. “I love to go to the beach for sunsets, and spend time walking on the Legacy Trail,” she says. “Our home has so much to offer. I like to try new places and enjoy the amenities of our area.”

  • An Important Update from Neal Communities Regarding Hurricane Ian

To Our Families, Friends, and Homeowners:

As we begin to recover from the effects of Hurricane Ian, it is our sincerest hope that you and yours are safe. We are hopeful that the storm’s impact on you and your family was not severe, though we realize that thousands of our friends and neighbors are still without power and are struggling in the aftermath.

As it has done in the past, our team came together in advance of the storm to prepare our neighborhoods and help ensure the safety of those who live there from nearby construction.

For those currently building with us, we are assessing our communities and a Neal Communities employee will be in touch with you as soon as possible to give an update on your home.

For homeowners, we are thankful to you for putting your trust in our team to build you a safe, solid, and beautiful home. While we adhere to the highest standards, we know you may have questions.

If you have experienced water intrusion or other damage to your home during the storm event, they should be reported to your insurer to be mitigated on an emergency basis.

If you have other concerns and you are still under your warranty period, please reach out to your respective warranty representative and we’ll begin to follow up on all calls as soon as we can. Please note that warranty emergencies will be prioritized based on severity.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we all begin to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Ian. As we persevere and return to a sense of normalcy, let’s continue to help each other in getting through this challenging time.

  • An Important Message From Neal Communities Regarding Hurricane Ian

First and foremost, please be prepared, stay safe, and heed advice from our local emergency officials. The well-being of our staff, families and homeowners is of the utmost importance. Due to the unpredictability of Hurricane Ian’s path, our offices and model homes will likely be closed starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday and should start to reopen on Friday at 8 a.m. (varying by location).

Our preparation is in full swing as Ian approaches the Gulf, and our team has developed a well thought-out and historically proven plan for hurricane preparedness. We began those preparations six days before the predicted landfall. Our team is working with our trade partners to complete the implementation of this plan prior to Tuesday evening, well in advance of the hurricane’s current track.

We understand the number one concern for many homeowners is flying debris, and we are managing our active construction sites to the best of our ability. However, in no circumstance could we ever completely eliminate this occurrence and do not want to set that expectation. We certainly advise residents of our communities to utilize storm shutters provided if necessary to help protect their home and take all advised precautions to ensure their personal safety. Bear with us as we do our best, but please understand that we simply cannot respond to every inquiry at this point or over the next couple of days as our staff focuses on securing our sites, as well as on their family’s personal safety and well-being.

As weather conditions change, and as needed, we will update this message, so please check this page and our Facebook page for any updated information.

We look forward to returning to our normal business late this week. In the meantime, thank you again for your patience and please stay safe throughout Hurricane Ian.

  • Company Culture Inspires Employees to Stay for Decades

Company Culture Inspires Employees to Stay for Decades

It’s the consensus among all of– they didn’t really want to leave. Work never felt like work for four of Neal Communities long-time staff members, including Kathy Cioffi, Priscilla Heim, Jim Schier and Leisa Weintraub. Each one spent more than two decades at Neal Communities and was, in their
own way, instrumental in the development of many people’s quality of life. But what causes people to want to stay within a company for as long as they did?

“I’d like to think it’s our family culture and that we give our employees the freedom to ‘do the right thing’,” said founder and chairman Pat Neal of Neal
    Communities.

Giving employees the freedom to make a difference in their community, in other people’s lives and in each other’s lives was a common theme among those who recently said their goodbyes.

    Kathy Cioffi’s Designed Entire Communities

For more than two decades, Kathy Cioffi had a direct influence on the design of the neighborhoods that Neal Communities built – from the lavish entrance ways, lush landscaping, unique architectural styles, varied community center amenities and preservation of environmental assets.

Cioffi retired as the Vice President of Design in April after 24 years with Neal Communities. But she said she didn’t really want to go. “As a matter of fact, I was really contemplating not retiring and staying a couple of more years,” Cioffi said. Instead, she returns to the office about once a week in a consulting capacity as the design team transitions

Cioffi first joined the Neal Communities team in 1998 as a designer for what would become one of the region’s largest home builders. She soon was promoted to manage the design center. In that role, she kept up with the latest architectural and decorating trends. She worked with product developers and architects on floor plans and elevations as well as tile and cabinetry. When she took on the role of Vice President of Design, Cioffi got even more involved with the look-and-feel of the communities being built.

“It’s a good feeling to see a community and know that I had a role in the design,” she said. “I loved the creativity of the job, so it was not really work for me. To see it all evolve was so much fun.”

For Cioffi, it was hard to say goodbye to her co-workers. “It becomes a big family and we do all work together – from the hard times like the downturn in 2008 to what’s happening now with the prosperity of the house sales,” she said. “Neal Communities is a wonderful company to work for. It was bittersweet for me to retire.

Priscilla Heim Embraced, Embodied the Family Culture

For 22 years, Priscilla Heim was Chairman and Founder Pat Neal’s administrative assistant. She helped transcribe dictation, craft memos, answer phone calls, handle his calendar and attend to his daily needs. She said she enjoyed every moment of it.

“Pat is a big visionary,” Heim said. “He sees things way before other people see them. He’s a good person. He looks to the future and plans for the future.”

Heim moved to Florida with her husband, Dave, in 1984 from Pennsylvania. At the time, Dave had been laid off from his job in construction due to the harsh winter weather. They decided to move to the warmer climate and be closer to relatives. Shortly after moving to Manatee County, Heim started working for an Episcopal church, where she stayed for 15 years before becoming Pat Neal’s administrative assistant in June of 1999.

Throughout her time at Neal Communities, Priscilla said she always felt a part of the company’s family. She made lifelong friends with many of her co-workers. “It was wonderful,” she said. “To the outside, Neal Communities is known for its landscaping, branding, style and beautiful homes. But what people don’t know is that, on the inside, Neal Communities is like that song, ‘Lean on Me.’ People call on each other when they need a friend. It’s a wonderful place to work.”

She said the actual Neal family members are as helpful as the employees. “The Neals are really great people to work with,” she said. “They don’t ask anyone to do anything they wouldn’t do themselves.”

Heim spent her last official day with the company in early March and is now enjoying retirement with her husband, Dave. She said it is strange not having to wake up to an alarm clock, but she loves to spend time looking out over the sunrise or sunset from her Myakka City home. She has gone back to visit co[1]workers a couple of times since leaving. “Those people mean a lot to me,” she said.

Jim Schier Loved that Neal Communities Gives Back

Jim Schier started working with Neal Communities in the early 1980s. At the time, he was employed by an accounting firm in Des Moines, Iowa, and Neal Communities was his client. In fact, the homebuilder was such a large client that the accounting firm moved Schier to open an office in the Sunshine State.

At the time, his wife was pregnant with their third child, and they moved to Bradenton. “I guess you could say it was a culture shock moving from Iowa to Florida,” he said, laughing at the memory. In 1984, Schier transitioned from the other company to working full-time for Neal Communities as the company’s lead CPA.

“Back then, we were a much smaller company,” Schier said. “But we always had just wonderful people to work with. I liked everybody that I worked with. We all got along and would come together for the common goal.”

Over the course of three decades, Schier has witnessed the company grow. He’s enjoyed the comradery of his co-workers. He’s also watched as Neal Communities has donated millions of dollars to community organizations and associations throughout the years.

“It’s part of Pat’s culture,” Schier said. “He gives a lot back to the community and a lot of the people that we work with at Neal Communities volunteer their time and treasures back to the community. It’s good for business and it’s good for the soul.”

After a 38-year career with Neal Communities, Schier said he is looking forward to retirement with his wife, Mary. The two have purchased an RV and intend to travel the United States. But, when he’s home, he still stops into the office to check on things.

“Sometimes, I don’t feel as though I’m retired,” he said, admitting that it’s hard to stay away. He also said he is looking forward to getting involved in the community himself and volunteering some of his own time when he is not traveling.

    Leisa Weintraub Brought Awards, Success

When Leisa Weintraub started working for Neal Communities in 1992 in marketing, she was challenged with her first assignment – getting University Park on the map. “By the time we did that, I had met every cartography department,” Weintraub said, laughing at the memory. It would not be the last time Pat Neal would challenge her. But it was those challenges Weintraub truly enjoyed during her 30 years as Vice President of Marketing for Neal Communities. She had a direct role in 50 groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings of communities from Tampa to Naples.

Weintraub tells the story of the resilience of Neal Communities. In 2008, when the market crashed, she watched Neal pivot his company’s path quickly. Rather than shutting down, like so many builders did, he downsized and changed his product lines. He found that townhomes were not desirable for buyers and ultimately invented a successful cottage home product. “It was amazing to watch, and it was inspiring to see his vision,” she said. “I’ve always seen his leadership, but that was remarkable because it was such a pivotal moment for the building industry.”

Weintraub was at the helm of marketing during much of Neal Communities’ growth. She remembers when the company hosted 13 grand openings in a single year. She played a strong role in all of them, from logo design to ultimately landing home sales through marketing efforts. “You learn how a community forms,” she said. “All of the aspects, intricacies and development processes that are used to create a community and its homes. It was always very, very fascinating to me.”

Weintraub also was instrumental behind the number of awards Neal Communities adorns on the shelf in the lobby of its Lakewood Ranch headquarters, including the Southwest Building Conference’s Aurora Awards and the Florida Home Builders Association Sales & Marketing Council’s EXCEL Awards. Neal Communities also has been recognized by the Parade of Homes and the Florida Green Building Coalition.

Professionally, Weintraub earned her Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM) certification through the National Association of Home Builders. She also was named Marketing Professional of the Year by the Florida Association of Home Builders Excel Award. She chaired the local Sales & Marketing Award Gala and the Parade of Homes Award Gala for the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association.

“Since I was at Neal for so long, I sort of got to be the encyclopedia. People would come to me and ask questions about how this or that happened,” she said. “It was often fast paced. It was challenging, and it was interesting. Each community was like your own child. They were all different. They were all marketed for their uniqueness.”

Now that she is retired, she hopes to spend time with her husband, Richard, who also sold his business and retired along with her. She intends to spend time in her garden and on her passion – clothing design. “I think the fascinating thing about working with Pat is that he is never standing still,” she said. “He is always moving and doing interesting things. And I’ve always loved that part of it. I’ll miss the wonderful and very capable team at Neal Communities.”

Making Room for the Next Generation

While Cioffi openly admitted to not wanting to leave, she said she is excited about the next generation taking over. “It’s good to bring in the younger generation and have a whole different set of ideas,” she said.

For Neal, he is saying goodbye to not just employees but good friends. “We work hard to create a family culture here at Neal Communities,” Neal said. “It’s always difficult to say goodbye, but we are thankful for the hard work and dedication that they gave to build wonderful neighborhoods for people to live, work and play.”
